If you have a collection that’s valuable to you, it’s important to make sure that you store it properly. Here are a few tips for safely storing some of the most popular collectibles.

Common Collectibles and How to Store Them

Trading Cards

Trading cards, from baseball cards to trading card games like Pokémon, have long been popular with collectors. No matter what or why you collect them, storing them properly will keep them in good condition so you can enjoy them for years to come.

When storing trading cards, using polypropylene sleeves with individual pockets for each card is the way to go. Not only does it make your collection easy to organize in binders, but it’s also one of the most cost-effective methods for storing these collectibles. If your collection is large, consider storing the bulk of it in a self-storage unit so you can save space in your closets, basement, or attic for other belongings.

Comic Books

Another popular collectible? Comic books. But these can be some of the most fragile collectibles as well. Taking care to store these right will ensure they stay in good shape.

When it comes to comic book storage, you need to do two things above all else. First is to bag your books, and second is to board them. Placing your comic books in individual Mylar bags will help keep dust, debris, and other damage from harming your books. When placing your comic books in the bags, don’t forget to add a small piece of durable cardboard as well. This will prevent any bends or creases from occurring. After that, you can place your comic books safely in a box for safekeeping. Just remember to stand the comics upright rather than stacking one on top of another.

Toys and Action Figures

They may originally be for children, but people of any age can take part in collecting toys and action figures.

If your toys and action figures are still in their original packaging – great. Keep them there. That’s usually the best way to ensure the toy is well protected. If it isn’t in original packaging, that’s okay, just make sure your collection is separated by the materials they’re made from. Keeping sharp and hard toys away from soft, plushy toys will help prevent tears and damage that can happen during storing and moving.

Vinyl Records

Vinyl records have experienced a comeback in recent years and are now highly sought after. The trouble with collecting and storing records is they are easily damaged. Here’s how to store them long-term so you can keep on enjoying them.

When storing your vinyl record collection, they must be kept in a cooler room that is protected from direct sunlight. Ideally, the environment will be stable as well. So, a finished basement is a good place to store them, but attics and garages should be avoided. Use both inner and outer record sleeves to protect your vinyl from dust. If you won’t be using some records frequently, then place them in a lidded box. And, of course, never store your records stacked one on top of the other; always store them upright.

Paintings

Collecting paintings is fun, but storing them is a little more tricky. It comes with a lot of considerations, as many materials can deteriorate if mistreated.

Before placing any paintings in storage, make sure they’re clean. Brush them thoroughly with a soft brush, but do so gently so you don’t accidentally damage your collectibles. Never store paintings rolled up – they need to be properly framed to keep them in good condition. So make sure you store your paintings framed. For large paintings, add backing boards to prevent bending and warping. If you’re going to be placing them in a basement or storage unit, cover your painting in wrapping paper or some soft cloth to prevent dust and debris from settling on them.

Antique Furniture

This is another group of collectibles that can be a little more challenging to store. Antique furniture tends to require more space than other collectibles, but storing the right way will help preserve all your treasures.

First, clean your furniture thoroughly. Dust wood with a soft cloth, vacuum upholstery at a low speed, and if there is any built-up grime, gently wash with warm water and soap. Whether you’re storing your furniture in a storage unit or a different space, don’t set it directly on the floor. Instead, raise it on wood pallets. And to protect your furniture from dust, cover them in blankets or sheets. Never use plastic wrapping or plastic sheets, as they can trap moisture and introduce mold and mildew, ruining your collectibles.
