A new year means it’s time to take on the challenge of some New Year’s resolutions. If yours is to declutter your home, here’s our advice on making your space clutter-free in 2024.

Evaluate the Situation

The first step of any decluttering process is to start with a bit of planning and organizing. It can be tempting to go out and buy a bunch of bins and bookcases to help you organize the clutter, but you’ll just be wasting your time and money on things you might not actually need. It’s essential to take the time to evaluate the situation first so you can understand where and what you need to declutter in your home.

The best way to do that? Take a walk around your home. See where there’s clutter and where you can condense space in these areas. Don’t forget to look in closets, cabinets, and your pantry, as those can be decluttered, too!

Set Goals You Can Reach

You know where the clutter is, now it’s time to set goals to help you tackle everything. Goals are crucial for any New Year’s resolution. If you don’t set goals, you could end up burning yourself out or becoming too overwhelmed.

Set attainable goals to help you take manageable steps toward achieving your resolution. Remember, decluttering your home is going to take time, so don’t plan on finishing it in a week. Instead, think of one or two tasks you can accomplish within a set time period (a week, a month, etc.).

Focus on the Little Things

Even with tasks and goals, there will be some weeks when decluttering your home will seem like an impossible task. While it may be easier to sit and do nothing these weeks, try focusing on one or two smaller areas instead. Even if you only tackle these small tasks, you can have peace of mind that you’re still making progress towards your goal of a clutter-free home.

What do we mean by smaller areas? Your bedroom nightstand could be one such space. The drawers in your bathroom vanity could also fit the bill.

Donate Old Clothes, Toys, and Furniture

As you begin to sort through all your stuff, you’ll likely have a lot of old paperwork and broken items you can toss. You’ll also probably start to come across a lot of items that are in fine condition but you just don’t need anymore. Instead of holding onto that bookcase that clashes with your home décor or that college sweatshirt that doesn’t fit anymore, you can donate them to a local charity so that others can get use out of them. And don’t forget, donations can be tax-deductible, so you’ll benefit twofold from donating your old stuff!

Create Designated Clutter Zones

Having absolutely zero clutter in your home is almost impossible. Because what do you do with loose rubber bands, pens, and take-out menus?

Don’t despair that your New Year’s Resolution can’t fully come true. Instead, lean into it a little by setting up some designated clutter zones. This can help you feel a little more relaxed and help keep clutter limited to a clear, manageable space. It might be a junk drawer in the kitchen or a clutter bin in your hallway closet. Whatever you choose, as long as you don’t let clutter stray from that area, this tactic can help you maintain organized harmony throughout the rest of the house.

Utilize a Storage Unit for the Important Things

When you declutter, there will be things worth holding onto even if you don’t want them taking up space in your home. For sentimental items, collector items, holiday décor, and seasonal clothes, consider renting a storage unit to keep these things safe while freeing up space in your home.

At EZ Access Storage, we make self-storage a breeze. We offer different size options to accommodate the many different needs and expectations of our customers. We also offer standard storage units, double-door units that make getting stuff in and out of your unit extra easy, and units with steel shelving to help keep all your belongings nicely organized.

Maintain Your Home

Getting your home completely organized and cleaned up requires a big effort. But once you’ve fulfilled this New Year’s resolution, you’ll be filled with pride and a sense of calm that’s certainly well-earned.

Just don’t forget that the work isn’t truly done. Maintaining your newly organized home requires ongoing dedication and diligence to make sure your hard work wasn’t all for naught. Pay attention to clutter problem areas in your home, stay diligent in keeping everything organized, and be mindful of the clutter you bring in from now on.
